2016 Trend Alert: BIG Sleeves

You know that ‘Seinfeld’ episode when Jerry was terrified he had to wear the puffy shirt live on tv. Cause it was ridiculous. Little did he, or us, knew the day would come when such style shirts would not only be acceptable but coveted.

2016 Spring/Summer is all about the massive huge sleeves. Whether they’re mutton, pirate inspired, ruffled, long, oversized, big, massive and all the related synonyms your mind can grasp  – they’re in.

I think it all kinda goes with our daily drama. I mean they perfectly fit into my routine, when I get all dramatic and talk with my hands, those sleeves – touching the ground, chaotically following my line of thought (I mean hands), beautifully complimented by bracelets or rings and the phone that’s always in my hand – they mean something. I really think we’re onto something here.

Can we get a bow-down for the fashion gurus & Jerry Seinfeld?

Trend wise big sleeves exist for:  1) we got so many aces up our sleeves it was time we dressed to fit the situation. Plus our egos are sky high so we kinda need to stay in the dramatic-massive angle of fashion. And 2) truth is, there’s only so many ways we can wear a shirt, or a blouse, or a top.

So once designers dipped a little bit into the past (slightly Victorian inspired with a dash of 70s sleeves) our pool of #OOTD got bigger. Literally.

Big sleeves are a statement. Of style. Of drama. Of coolness. Of effortlessness. Pick your shtick and roll with it.

How to wear BIG SLEEVES? Hard as it may sound, you wear them like normal sleeves, the difference is – cause they’re a statement you can keep them a sole item and wear a simple outfit with them , or have fun and mix them with funky items and rock a sophisticated outfit.

Big sleeves come in: shirts, off the shoulders tops, or dresses.

For a simple, minimal-with-a-twist look you can wear a shirt with massive sleeves and a pair of office trousers or a skirt. It’s business with a dash of chicness to it. LOVE this.

For a cooler more sophisticated style opt for those white ruffled sleeve tops paired with a classic pair of denims. It’s so effortless and simple it screams perfect style.

For a more classic grown-up professional but fun look wear big sleeve dresses that make you look like an editor from ‘The Devil Wears Prada’.

Well this ain’t no ‘discovering plutonium by accident’ situation, but it’s a design gimmick that’s really a breath of fresh air, and it came right when I thought we’ve pretty much done it all and seen it all. And I was just about to go on another rant on how much we need a bloody fashion revolution. It’s not like the big sleeves save the day, but they sure give us more food for style and room for some fun outfit-venturing.

If you’re loving this look (I know I am) you can shop my fave big sleeve picks below, from designer to retail.
