What dresses to wear this autumn? Classics versus trendy!

what dresses to wear this fall

Between a thousand trends and another thousand of youtube and instagram hauls and unboxing videos there’s still a lot of style questions left unanswered and a few question marks that keep bugging me: are we really that obsessed *still* with buying clothes? It seems we’re only buying to unbox… where do all these people go to work or about their day that they get to wear all these sophisticated outfits, and how many outfits does one really need to function in style? And do we constantly need to buy and unbox online to look like a million bucks?

Is there anyone out there who’s dressing for fun, regardless of this global need for validation and emulation of fashion?

Do people still wear regular clothes and if so can regular clothes look nice?

It is this particular sartorial predicament that got me here today to this post about dresses. Dresses are the #1 thing in a woman’s closet that make an outfit. Period. No need for layering, unless you want to, no need for tops or bottoms, for pairings and matching…. it’s one item that holds it all together. And while it’s just one it holds a massive power, to make any outfit look however you want it: clean, sexy, chic, hobo, sophisticated, formal, cute, etc.

And honey… there is no better season (aside from summer and spring of course) to wear dresses than fall. Ahhh the array of fabrics, and lengths, and cuts and styles, and don’t even get me started on layering with coats and pairing the dresses with boots of all sorts. It is a heaven for fashion lovers.

But do we need to buy more to look more… fashionable? Or are there some fall dresses that remain staples and never go out off style? On the other hand if we love the dopamine rush and want to have fun with style fads, what do we buy this fall so that we are as cool and as sophisticated  as those instagram IT girls?

The knit dress

A classic autumn winter dress that in 2024 looks rather minimal, demure, long, high neck, or slightly oversized. Nothing is too sexy yet it’s very grown up and very sophisticated without trying. From chunky to fine knits these dresses are amazing for cold season. You can wear tights and leggings underneath, boots, and layer them with coats of all sorts. This is the definition of sophisticated  fall outfit with 0 effort.

What’s out this season is the very fitted knitted styles, the mini knitted dress, the just above the knee lengths, especially when paired with ankle boots. Big no for sure.

Boho is back

Well I’ll be damned… hated this style for a long time but guess what? I kinda like in 2024. Somewhere between being pretty hobo myself and seeing some runway looks for 2024 fall (Isabel Marant and …) I kinda fell in love with those floral oversized, extra long dresses, long sleeves, amazing prints, cinged waists – all of them worn with brown or burgundy leather boots, and a massive wool coat or fur coat on top. THIS will be me this cold season. Man… I am in love with this dress style.

Maxi dresses

While everything seems to be cut closer to the body it’s also very covering and by that I mean that high neck and flor length dresses are a thing in 2024. They’re not as oversized as a lifeless sack, although they can be, but they’re slightly more tailored without actually being too fitted. Does that make sense to you?

Demure dresses

Ahh… the apparently easy to do but very hard to nail style. You’d think that something basic – a grey long dress – is easy. What could be so hard about wearing it? The devil lies in the details my friend and I always say she who can wear the most basic thing and look fab is somebody to look up to fashion wise.

So yes everything that is clean cut, grey, brown, burgundy, black is IN. Simplicity at its finest.

What are the trendy dresses of 2024 fall?

This is for those old rags and staple pieces that are already hanging in our closets, but what about some new freshly picked treasures? Are there any new bits worth splurging on, or not?

Well there’s a bit of statement in dresses this season and the wow factor comes from off the shoulders designs, ruffles and bubble style dresses, leather and some draping styles…

So if you want something new alongside something old… take your pick and go for it.
