Summer Ruffles.

Once upon a time there was a trend that I did not care much for. The ruffles. That happened circa 2014. Two years later almost all the collections at fashion week SS2016 had clothes in them that penned out a few trends borderline-ruffles: the Victorian trend, the see-through, the lace, the flamenco. Of course, a brilliant mind would have seen the next trend’s comeback as a DOH moment. Not me. In my case the a-ha factor stroke this morning. ‘Wait. Every goddamn trend this summer, that is even a tiny bit romantic related has a sort of ruffle in it!’ And so it was. And so it is. Then I googled shit, and researched and I don’t know how in the name of Lawd I missed this ruffled trend in the first place. Perhaps it was my lack of penchant towards it. It all kinda grew on me since… this morning. Or maybe since the flamenco trend.

What is so great about the summer ruffles of 2016 though? They are cool. I swear to God this is the truest cool meaning I’ve used in a loooong time.

Ruffles are cool.

In 2016 summer ruffles lie somewhere between true-idiotic-sweet-it-makes-you-puke-kinda-romance AND a bloody middle finger to all our preconceived ideas of ruffles, hence the contrasted styles, and edginess, and sexiness of summer ruffles this year. They’re all you know plus all you’ve never knew existed in ruffles. They’re tamed and flirty, and classic, but then BAM! there goes a ruffled top or skirt, or some new ruffled style that’s so funky and sophisticated you don’t know whether it’s okay or not to love it or hate it.

*THIS* is precisely why I’m utterly and desperately in love with summer ruffles this year.

What designers did for 2016 Spring-Summer is show us how easy and cool (oops, there I went again) is to slap a ruffle on just about anything.

From lingerie that cheekily shows from underneath something, from swimwear all the way to pants, skirts, dresses, jackets, sweaters – anything can carry ruffles. They dance around you, they float around you, they make your ego high as a kite, they make you feel feminine and sophisticated, retro but trendy.

Honestly I love them.

In case we’re rowing in the same boat here, I’ve picked up my fave ruffled clothes for you below.

Nothing is ever fully complete without the street style inspo. We don’t need it, but GOD do we love it.
