Autumn 2025: Is Maximalism trending again?
Maximalism is at fashion’s realm once again. After years of quiet luxury, clean girl aesthetics, and basics – fashion is claiming its own right to the beautiful chaos and the unparalleled bold, colourful, and brilliant outfits that only fashion people get. Aka maximalism. I know it sounds very pretentious if not even a bit smug but if you scrolled through the street style pics at Copenhagen fashion week you know what I’m talking about. People are once again celebrating style and clothes without the fear of losing the clean look. In fact we are slightly over the clean girl aesthetic and are opting for bold accessories, daring prints and mixing fabrics and styles of all sorts.
Why is MAXIMALISM trending again in 2025?
One word: post pandemic fashion revolution. Okay 4 words, but you get it: after years of living in beige sweats and in perfectly curated beige flats wearing short nails, 2 earrings, colourless lip glosses and no mascara we have decided to dip into the loudness of past trends, bold outfits of the 2000, the kitsch, the glam, the edginess, the undone vibe of a past unruled by social media curation and perfection – and what do you say what do you know? We’ve collectively started wearing colour again, and grew further away from basic looks.
Not that there’s anything wring with them. But maximalism was a fashion thirst waiting to be quenched.
And it has.
On one hand I would have hoped at 44 I was more style established, but I’m not. One day I love the cleanness of a monochamatioc look, and the next I’m a hobo chic librarian.I should hope somewhere in between hopping back and forth between styles there is a common ground, but well… how we present ourselves and how others see us can sometimes be 2 quite different things.
Truth is I don’t feel whole in my soul unless I add an extra something to an outfit, no matter how small or insignificant. I guess that makes me not a minimalist…
With 2025 being the dawn of maximalism I can finally breath again. Honestly I feel we can all collectively start experimenting more with fashion, I pray we do so, fearlessly and sans any care for curation in both social media as well as real life. THIS is where the beauty of fashion lies.
While the quiet luxury is very inherent with its literal saying, maximalism comes with a huge dose of fashion loudness in clothes, colour and accessories, self expression, personality that transcends and translates into all sorts of personal styles. Nothing is off the table sartorially speaking.
To people who are naturally drown towards more, or are just louder creatures in terms of life – maximalism appeals more. Tbh I would have LOVED to be a minimalist at heart, in fact I cry a little when I see a perfectly manicured minimalist look because I know despite my efforts that will never be me – BUT maximalism being trendy yet again teaches me one important lesson that I should have known at my age:
- trends come and go, just do you every day, be who ever and how ever you wish, dress t your moods and if you coordinate with fashion great, if not… better luck next time, if you care about these sort of things.
The good news is… there will always the next outfit.
