TREND Alert: SUEDE Trench Coats

What is trendy but not desperate? Beautiful but not… plain? Sexy, but not vulgar? Retro, but not old? What is so versatile that it can work in any outfit, any style, from spring to late summer, and maybe even warmer winter days? It ticks all the boxes of those sartorial trends we’re on about, yet it’s been out there since at least the 70s. Oh yes, and it makes us look like French film stars from a Jean-Luc Godard movie?

Yes you guessed it. It’s a TRECNH COAT, but you see… not just any trench coat. This year Her Majesty Fashion has a very clear idea of what she wants clinging on our backs and cinging us at the waist. It’s a particular coat that is so much more than the classic trench, that’s been out there for such a long time, but it’s only now that we’re making it a true star: THE SUEDE TRENCH COAT.

With the suede ruling the trend-scene last year, and the 70s still going strong, it was really only a matter of time before we put one and one together.

So what’s the deal with suede trench coats?

Well it’s not as if we’ve just discovered water here. Truth is they were huge in the 70s and also in the 90s there was quite a penchant for suede coats if you remember. The 70s styles were either softer versions, or more structured, but they were very body-cut and fitted. Knee-length paired with all the brown shades in the world with high boots, chunky heels, and fitted turtlenecks. Sort of like journalist meets weekend music addict and ta-daaa that’s her style.

The 90s brought back suede in more grungy coats, slightly oversized, think rockroll meets ghetto and they both party with Winona Rider. And they were usually black, or burgundy.

What SUEDE trench coat styles are IN in 2016?

Today we live in a more refined age, better cuts, better designs, borderline luxe, even if they’re edgy and grungy we’ve become more posh if you will.

So the classic suede trench coat of 2016 can be exactly like those Burberry coats, OR it can be oversized, long to the floor in 2 sizes bigger hanging off posh shoulders, in thin suede fabric.

It can be double breasted, massive collar so you can pop them and do the tucked hair trend, or it can be draped and slouchy.

The secret of our times is that everything works, and all is in, it’s just a matter of choice and personal style. One thing all suede coats of 2016 have in common is the fact that they’re brown: light, dark, nude, doesn’t matter. Earthly tones are IN.

How to wear suede trench coats?

There are 3 types of outfits that will always look great with a brown suede trench coat on.

  • all-black (black suit, jumpsuit, black jeans and tee, black pants and shirt or sweater, black dress and black shoes on)
  • all white (especially white pencil dresses, or white Isabel Marant jeans and shirt)
  • denim (blue jeans look fab against brown suede)

If you’re feeling adventurous and love to have fun with clothes you can mix and match that suede coat however you please, IT WILL look amazing.

I also love the suede coat and 70s flowy dresses with ankle boots, I love a denim skirt with a cropped top and a suede coat over.

And I think a suede coat paired with a more sporty luxe outfit, that’s very 2016, makes it all feel more sophisticated.
