The One Shoulder Trend

Monday morning. Tired af. Can’t bother with fashion, but still doesn’t wanna look like a slob. #lifestruggles Therefore raises hand to ask question.

“Uhm… is there one style trick to make me look put together, sophisticated and basically like I made an effort, but actually haven’t?”

“Yes, replied Fashion in her jaded bored kinda way. Give them the cold shoulder. All. The. Time.”

“Oh, ” said with a smirk, trying to seem un-interested, and… you know… cold.

“No, peasant. Not like that. (eyeroll) The trick is in the one shoulder trend. Show the world just one of your shoulders, presumably your best, and the rest is irrelevant. You will look sophisticated no matter how much you screw up the rest of your outfit.”

2017 has been the year of the one shoulder trend and it’s kind of sad I stood it out, for reasons none other than I didn’t know any better and didn’t really stumble onto any breathtaking one shoulder top or dress.

Anyway… there’s always a good thing in any bad situation. So let’s get this trend report rolling and see what it is.

Why the one shoulder trend is more than a trend?

To the question who wants to live forever, this little trend can stand up and take all the awards, because although it seems to have its peak moment in Spring/Summer 2017, it’s also a very great trick to jazzing up a look, to giving some structure to an outfit, or to breaking your body shape lines into visually longer and leaner. All these traits one shoudler tops and dresses have – make this look very staple worthy and extremely sophisticated.

Hence doing it circa 2 months later, and even 2 years for that matter is no biggie. In fact, if you ask me it’s even better for the obvious reasons – you’ll be quite singled out in your look cause the rest of the word already did it, you have tons of pics and styles of the past as mood boards, you know what sucks and what looks fab and so on. Basically… you know… the good bit in every situaiton I was telling you about.

So yes, I do believe with all my heart that some trends are so much more than trends and fads of just one season. Sure they peak most in summer or winter, for a few months or so, but in the big picture they might’ve actually been right under our noses the whole time, and we’re just witnessing a case of fashion nipping and tucking .

Such is the case of the one shoulder trend. From VIPs to mortals and to those sad fashion ignoramuses around us it’s safe to say more people than less have worn a one shoulder top. As a teenager, as a grown up, or even by accident when that blouse with a big boat neck rolled off one shoulder.

You did it, and you probably felt cooler in a very sophisticated and cheeky kinda way.

Fast forward a few years, change the fashions, and the times, the situations, and occasions – and if you still chose to wear a one shoulder top chances are you’ll pull it off trend or no trend.

Of course facts such as designers showing them on the runway for SS2017 makes it a safer card to bet on. If Victoria Beckham, Versace, Viktor Rolf give us this look repeatedly you know its’a  a keeper.

Bottom line is in case you had doubts rock it.

How to do the one shoulder look a la 2017?

It’s all in the over-the-top VERSUS minimalism.

So you either wear ruffled shirts and massive bow tops with one shoulder design, OR you do the sleek version of this outfit, the classic polished Victoria Beckham look.

Pair one shoulder tops with high waist dressy pants, tailored trousers with side pockets for office outfits. Shoes wise high stilettos are perfect for very posh and very sophisticated look, and flats of all sorts look super effortless.

One shoulders dresses are a massive hit and comeback this season with shirt styles being in the spotlight and evening gowns with one shoulder design looking more sophisticated and refined than ever.

From mini dresses to maxi styles, gowns to casual – one shoulder styles are the detail that make a simple dress or top look interesting and give some edge or chicness to an otherwise too-common outfit.
