Flats For Fall: A 2024 Guide To Styling All The Ballet Flats
This whole past summer has been a return to our feminine era wearing flats and dainty shoes with every outfit while still holding onto comfort, so it feels really nice to see that we are taking the flats of 2024 way into fall season, as much as we can given rainy colder days are upon us. But can use wear flats in autumn? And if so, how do we style them?
Girl… in 2024 we can wear whatever we want, but for the sake of being fashionable – I guess we can look at some rules and style scenarios that make it easier for us to pick quick and cute outfits.
First and foremost we need to talk about what flat styles are IN this season, because not everything that’s flat is fab.
Having said that – mesh flats were very trendy this year and as flimsy and thin as they are we could definitely stretch them way into fall on those warm sunny days, paired with jeans or mid dresses.
Square toe flats aka mary janes are the IT shoe of 2024 if you ask me, so wear them on heavy rotation cause they are so cute, so feminine, so chic and give an outfit some sort of understated elegance and old money vibe that it’s a pity to not have a pair for ‘just in case’ moments.
The pointy toe flat is and forever will be my all time favourite, a symbol of elegance and incredible femininity, it’s simple yet so refined and it makes the legs look so long and lean it’s a classic in my book.
The classic Chanel flats – well they are iconic, staple, expensive, status symbol and very very elegant in a very subtle way.
How do we wear these shoes in 2024 autumn? How do we brace the wind and the cold and the rain in them?
JEANS & MIDI DRESSES
Well… in my mind and wishful thinking, and contrary to the actual reality I’m living in for the past week – autumn is this sunny season, where days are blissfully warm, mornings are crispy, sun is shining and we can still do bare legs every now and then. It’s a transitional fashion season where you can still rock your summer dress or denim shorts if you feel like it. So given this hope and mindset that I have – I will be the spokesperson for mesh flats all the way into autumn 2024.
They look amazing with jeans and midi dresses, sort of like a meeting half way of summer and autumn in an outfit. A white shirt or t-shirt, a cardigan on top or a blazer, leather jacket or even a trench coat complete the look.
CASUAL SMART & SOPHISTICATED
Another ballet flat style that is so 2024 is the animal print flat shoe which looks absolutely stunning paired with an office look aka: all black ensemble, a casual pantsuit, a pair of black jeans and simple black cardigan… The animal print flats are the statement of ballet flats and they will always pop when paired with something minimal, monochromatic, or classic. They give off a casual rich vibe.
TRENDY, COOL & FEMININE
Mary janes are everything but sexy, so we are all dabbing into this new era of feminine pretty dainty geek cool kinda look by wearing mary janes ballet flats with anything as long as the weather and God allow us. They look cute with socks if you’re cold, they look amazing in patent or any other fabric and they can make any outfit that you wear look very 2024 in a very Instagram kinda way… I know how it sounds but it is true and it’s kinda cool, no?
I love them with bare legs – mini skirts or shorts – and a heavier top like a blazer, cardigan, layered situation… the contrast of the styles is what I adore about this flats and how to wear them.
Jeans obviously look amazing and so do wide legged pants paired with a simple basic t-shirt and a leather jacket for example.
COCO CHANEL
They are iconic so the Chanel flats will look amazing regardless of how we style them, but personally I love them with more skinny inspired pants (jeans or trousers of all sorts), long skirts, coats, shawls, ponchos. They also look beautiful worn with lighter colours. Rich and sophisticated.
BASIC BUT BEAUTIFUL
Saving another timeless classic for last is the simple outfit made up of jeans, white t-shirt and black ballet flats (pointy toes styles look best). It’s a new version of the sneakers with jeans outfits that has been done way too many times, it’s a more grown up, office appropriate version of the jeans and white tee look. As basic as this styling seems it’s actually very giving of 12048 variations: red lips, big bag, small handbag, hair up, hair down, cardigan on top, smart blazer, casual poncho, trench coat, leather jacket, denim jacket, bomber – the sky is the limit to this base.
I don’t know about you but I will be sitting right here in my ballet flats bracing the rain and the cold and hoping and praying that my fashion stubbornness will summon the sun and its warmer days. I think there’s still a bit of summer left in this autumn hence this post.
Who knows if ballet flats will still be a thing next year so let’s milk them as much as we can…
