The CORSET Trend 2017: How To Wear It Without Looking Tacky?
There are trends that look great no matter what, and then there are the tricky motherfuckers that take a certain kinda person, trick, style, or razzmatazz to master. The sartorial-bitch side of me adores the latter. The amount of fashion critique we’ll have at our fingertips at the expense of the latter is pure heaven, and as cruel as that may sound eventually it will lead to greater styling ideas. And I mean that with all my heart. Nothing great ever came from anything too comfortable. So thank God for those occasional fashion faux pas.
In case the title wasn’t betraying enough of today’s agenda – we are talking about one of 2016-2017 fall greatest trends – THE CORSET trend 2017. That piece of garment from the 1800s that constrained waists (and not only) and defined femininity. Good God. As time passed so did the corset with all it used to stand for, and today it’s back, purely for style purposes.
How do we feel about that? Well… the corset had a brief comeback in those kitsch 2000s when Cristina Aguillera and Britney Spears wore one with anything and looked so cheap and tacky it was horrible. We all did back in the day. So… to get excited over the corset’s comeback in 2017 is to be blind and oblivious of its past devastating consequences. Right?
Wrong.
Here’s why: we can of course wear the corset as a 2000s reminiscent fashion moment and make a tacky ass out of ourselves, OR we can do it 2017 style.
The line is thin my friends, but that’s what’s fun about it. If, of course we’re on the right side of that line, which we of course as sartorial savvys are.
How to wear the corset trend 2017? You can start to emulate looks from models off the runway a la Kendall Jenner or the Hadids, and while you’re at it have a look at Kim Kardashian nailing the comeback of the 2000s big time.
YES, I love how Kim is dressing lately, and the way she wears her corsets is not too bad tbh, he key being a massive jacket over them and a full on sexy attitude. I mean, own it.
If, you’re not one to love the full on display you can wear a corset over a top. Kim’s doing this as well when she’s wearing corsets over t-shirts.
FW street style brought a lot of corset inspo when la creme de la creme rocked them over tops and dresses, and picked either full on corsets, or those resembling waist bands with laces a la Edwardian age.
They say there’s no wrong or right in fashion, and you’ve got to explore and experiment, to have fun, and to express yourself – but when it comes to corsets I’d say this only holds half true. You see… I think wearing corsets is great but risqué. You risk looking cheap and whore-ish a la 1800 or a la 2000s. So the Q of how to style one is rather importante.
- avoid too dolled up looks, instead opt for messy long hair, un-done makeup, et all
- go for monochromatic looks until you get the hang of it
- wear them with high waisted jeans
- pay attention to structure: tight corset balanced with boyfriend cut pants for example
- layer the corset with oversized coats or jackets
- also opt for lingerie inspired corsets underneath oversized jackets or see-through sweaters
- keep it all simple rather than edgy or sophisticated to avoid looking tacky.
I love this look, but I’ll say it is rather tricky and THAT is great. We’ve been style lazy for far too long.
