Instagram Trends: FISHNETS

This is a mad world we live in, both IRL as well as on Instagram. Just to define fashion trends, par example, based on the two worlds is pretty insane. But why brush it under the rug, when in fact it’s the truth. Trends, and looks, and outfits are born not just IRL anymore (aka see someone on the street and start emulating the look, or read the papers on latest trends and browse the shops for things to fit the seasonal sartorial situation), BUT also online. Hello Instagram looks.

And what looks great in one world may simply suck in another, and the other way around.

Yes I am talking about the heavy contouring trend, the super made up eyebrows, that fake pout, the 1,209,847, 987 filters used on a face, the ubiquitous face features everyone’s striving to have naturally, OR not. Hate to break it to you but IRL looks a bit different.

Yes we all wanna be pretty and beautiful, but I don’t mind a little edge and unconventional sparkle in a person. Be it a tiny wrinkle cause of too much laughter, or un-perfect boobs (cause perfection is so boring).

Anyway… that’s the downside of the virtual reality if you will. The perks are infinite, and one of them is that a lot of great looks are born on Instagram. Bloggers and celebs and trendsetters with massive followings and major creativity never disappoint, so every now and then we’re blessed with great Instagram outfits to emulate IRL.

One of these trends is none other than the FISHNETS. You know… those fishnet stockings borderline stripper but sorta cool and edgy and punk and incredgly sexy. They can be all of the above and so much more, good or bad, tacky or incredibly sexy and cool.

When it comes to fishnets, the reality is: 1) they never really left and women such a Monica Bellucci probably lived in them since they were 20 years old, and 2) wearing them today, if you’re not Monica Bellucci is a tricky business. Nailing the fishnet look is probably harder than actually fishing for a fish. What?

There’s no pretty way for me to say this: it’s about great style. You either have it or you don’t. Hence the sartorials wearing fishnets with mini skirts and high heels and looking incredibly high fashion, or trendy sans the cheap or tacky side, and others who layer more than a bloody onion but look cheaper than a Primark lipgloss.

Hey, who says life’s fair?

What is the key to wearing fishnets and looking great? A la Instragram that is?

After a profound and long Instagram research I have reached the conclusion that in order to nail the Instagram fishnets trend we need to start off easy:

  1. wear fishnet socks. I LOVE these! They are the perfect quirky dramtic cool detial to an otherwise normal outfit. From heels to sneakers, to sandals to brogues – fishnet socks are the cool and entry level of #InstragramFishnetsTrend
  2. wear fishnets underneath ripped jeans. It’s a very ratchet but super cool look, sort of like undone glam, urban, details-make-an-outfit sort of style.
  3. let your fishnets’ waistband peak from under your mom jeans and crop top. Apparelnty THIS is the massive #OOTD Instragram invasion involving fishnets. Easy to do, but obviously not for office wear, nor for everybody. BUT for fashion’s sake we should never ever, ever, ever, ever say never.
  4. and last but not least fishnets worn as stockings. TBH for me this is the hardest look to pull off. You can either wear tiny hole fishnets with classic high heels and a classic dress or skirt, or you can try and experiment with trendy and sophsiticated pieces: sneakers and leather skirt for example. Personally I am not too keen on that teenage punk’ish look side of fishnets, worn with Marten boots and plaid mini skirts. But that’s just me. You go on and do your own thing.

Now I can’t tell you whether or not this trend looks great in both worlds since I haven’t tried it in either, but were I to give it a go… I think I’d wear it IRL with the same pride and swag (yeah I just said that) as I post it on Instagram.

Your turn.
