Kim Kardashian Beauty, Makeup & Hairstyle

When it comes to fame & money, love & hate, there’s no one like Kim Kardashian – the woman who makes us watchers split into 2 teams who either praise or hate her. FashionTag has taken the time to see what the buzz is all about with Kim Kardashian. Is her style one to aspire to or not? Does this woman know good fashion? Kim Kardashian is always in the spotlight promoting her fragrances, clothing line, hanging out with her sisters, spotted on airports, going on shows, doing red carpet appearances… Her job is looking posh and branded at all times, so it comes as no surprise that her style evolves around ‘always looking groomed and dolled up‘.

What Kim stands for style wise is the Hollywood/New York/Miami woman who loves her curves, dark long luscious tresses, full lips and dons her sex appeal and kitten like hotness in high heels, leather leggings or tight ripped jeans, blazers, super fitted dresses, plunging cleavage.  She loves rich basic luxurious textures and colors: whites, black, reds, blues, lace, fur, leather, cashmere, silk. She’s always caring an amazing bag (usually a Hermes) and uber cool glam accessories: bracelets, bold necklaces, huge sunglasses, animal printed scarves, short dark nails (love those)

As she has build a name for herself she has put a style on that too – Sexy Glam! I do confess I’d love to see her a bit more edgy and experimental with her fashion choices and I recon Kanye West has a bit of this ‘try-new-stuff’ effect on her. She seems to go for more clean, retro, cover-up outfits, and though they may not always do her justice, hey, we’ve gotta give the girl points for trying, right? I mean we’ve all gotta learn how to walk before we run. So I’m still holding my breath on that one. I wasn’t too keen on her white lace dress (too busy for her short frame)  but her casual black ensemble from her and Kanye‘s trip to Italy (fitted dress and oversized trench with a casually thrown camera over her shoulder) looked fabulous! Also a more natural looking hair, or just different may bring some freshness to her image. For instance she looked fantastic in the white skinny trousers and white peplum top with a much shorter, straight natural hair-do. Same wow effect on me, had her bohemian 1970’s inspired looks: bell-bottom jeans, wedges, loose tops, beach tresses, fringe bags. And though these styles may not be quite Kim Kardashian, it is refreshing and fun to see her a bit more different, if not for the actual looks, than at least for creating a more wow effect when donning her actual style.

So let’s just hope Miss Kardashian will have more fun with her fashion and not take it so seriously and we’ll get to see her in new funky outfits. If not… we’ll always keep her as a major reference for stunning makeup, hair, jewelry, shoes, bags and red carpet looks (the black dress and red long one are absoluteness mind blowing). Her casual street style? Sexy business like: amazing leggings/skinny trousers, high heels/boots, shirts & blouses in rich fabrics and blazers of millions of colors, cuts and designs. Sometimes she goes for the skirts, or maxi dresses, or as of lately peplum, over-the-knee-retro dresses that cover her up. Bad? Quite the opposite, if I may say so.

So leaving aside all the controversy this beauty brings with her – upon focusing on her style, we gotta give her what she deserves. She knows sexy, and does it. She knows her fans and niche and delivers just what they desire – which coincidentally represents her own fashion choices. Though a rich babe, she sympathies with her fun base and respects their support and wish to be and look as their idol – so she and her sisters make sure their styles are affordable for us girls. Their Kardashian Kollection at Sears looks fantastic and quite appropriate for both office attire and going out. Kim Kardashian loves to look beautiful and glamorously put together. Is there a limit to that? Should the media & people blame, judge or scrutinize her for looking too posh and groomed all the time? Or is she playing it a little too safe or been-there-done-that, style wise, in a time when women and girls want to shock and be more rock’n’roll and edgy?

Audrey Hepburn Style, Black Dress

Audrey Hepburn Style, Black Dress

When one thinks of Audrey Hepburn (14 May 1929 – 20 January 1993) elegance & beauty come into mind.  With her big eyes, thick eyebrows and tall slender figure she succeeds in becoming timeless through both her beauty and talent, in a time when the world had a thing for Marilyn Monroe or Lana Turner, and men and women alike lusted for curves and big bosoms. Different than her time’s standards she not only made it big but gave true meaning to, what she still stands for today – classic style, elegance & simplicity in all its forms.

It was Audrey Hepburn’s style that has granted her a place on the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1961 and timeless descriptions such as ”most beautiful woman of all times” or ”most beautiful woman of the 20th century’‘.

Never regarding herself as neither beautiful nor stylish she has always believed that simplicity and understated elegance say much more than any bling or unnecessary adornment. ”What is more beautiful than a simple sheath made an extraordinary way  in a special fabric, and just two earrings?”

Her longtime friendship and partnership with Givenchy has put both her and the designer in the history of fashion. Though not an exciting 1st memory for Givenchy, this collaboration has turned out to be the most memorable in time, with Givenchy dressing the actress for both on and off screen occasions. Creating and designing her outfits for films like Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Paris When It SizzlesGivenchy fell in love with Audrey Hepburn’s style. She became his muse and, him to her, irreplaceable in terms of fashion choices. ‘‘Givenchy gave me a look, a kind, a silhouette. He has always been the best and he stayed the best because he kept the spare style that I love”.

For Givenchy it was a partnership and admiration that grew with time, or at least with their 1st encounter. When told that he was about to create dresses for Miss Hepburn he was over the moon, only to be completely disappointed upon discovering that it was Audrey (not Katherine as he had thought). Trying to elegantly dismiss her, he told Audrey he had little time to spare but completely changed his mind and fell in awe with the elfin featured lady when he discovered her true beauty and amazing personality.

She knew exactly what she wanted and how to look. She knew what fit her best and had an inborn elegance and attitude that is still emulated and copied by millions of women and advertising campaigns. Givenchy has later confessed that even after 35 years of their collaboration  Audrey Hepburn‘s  ”measurements had not changed an inch”. Yet Audrey Hepburn was not so self confident and even said ”I hated myself at certain periods. I was too fat or too tall, or maybe just too ugly”.

Audrey Hepburn was the image for Salvatore Farragamo, who created a shoe for her and made her his fashion house ambassador and Ray-Bans, that she popularized in Breakfast At Tiffany’s. It was with this film that she became a style icon reference. Audrey Hepburn dress to this day remains the definition of elegance. Who could forget the black Givenchy dress in Breakfast and Tiffany’s?

With her necklace, black gloves, bangs & chic simple yet sophisticated look she went down in the history of style.  In a time when women played the femme fatale roles, she came and never left, with her rather androgynous look, skinny figure, sheath dresses, bangs and understated elegance. Her flat pumps, minimal outfits, basic color and lack of curves told the world it was all possible!

Director Billy Wilder couldn’t have said it better ”This girl… may make  bosoms a thing of the past.” Well… I wouldn’t hold my breath on that. She made nothing a thing of the past, she only proved a whole world that it’s OK to look different, while showing that sometimes all a girl needs to turn heads is grace. After all… elegance is an attitude, right?

‘R.I.P. to the girl you used to see’ are lyrics Rita Ora might have taken too serious, style wise, as she was seen out and about just a few days ago rocking a new look. Her platinum long curls are now replaced by a short blond hairstyle with black roots a  new fashion statement… Or perhaps the beginning of a forever changing hairstyle for her. Hey, did’t Rihanna start just about the same way? One might dare think Miss Ora is channelling Rihanna by the minute. Or not?

Rita Ora Style

Fun, daring, hot, sexy & a mess, Rita Ora can sure make anyone turn some heads over her style. Her now-yesterday’s blond curls & bright red statement lips, fingers, neck & ears adorned with all the blings one can find and wear all at the same time, baggy clothes and big shoes – make Rita Ora one woman not afraid to express herself. And that ladies is something to strive for. Force, braveness & nonchalance – all with a smile on your face. I always did say fashion is about having fun and I respect all those who know how to play and explore all there is to this otherwise regarded as too superficial area.

Rita Ora is the girl who looks the loudest and most fun in a crowd and that transpires in her style: electric coloured tight tops showing bare mid-riff paired with long skirts, denim cut-offs or baggy trousers. Funky shoes are her signature as well as the boxy boyfriend jackets, leather studded or denim ones. Though she dresses up in rather masculine, ghetto, bad boy’ish clothes,  Rita Ora‘s style is nonetheless very sexy & hot. A bit kitsch for some, her ghetto glam style allows her to just mix and match anything from masculine to feminine, from prints to patterns from past styles to present trends. She’s eclectic & daring, with her boyfriend T-shirts and chunky glamorous jewellery. She’s a hot mess in sluttish tops & short shorts, covered more by her jewellery opulence rather  than her clothes. But who cares, right? Oh and let’s not forget her most signature items apart from the golden locks and red lips: hats & long kitsch nails. But this girl can definitely turn up the hotness and sophistication when on the red carpet! She turns to high heeled pumps, tight knee length lace dresses, long sleeves, white elegance… locking up the ghetto girl and unlocking the elegant classy persona.

If her style is urban glam or just kitsch is for you to decide. She’s a mixture of London urban rock style & Latin looks – though I know she’s not Latin she does remind of the very famous Serena with her red lips, hot curves, and big jewellery. Empowering & beautiful or hot & kitsch she’s a girl who will make you look twice…

Yesterday Marilyn Monroe would have been 86 years old… Decades later and we are still copying her, commenting her. Women all over the world – from your regular girl next door to the established celebrity out there try to emulate her style. Sexy, vulnerable, powerful, honest.

Marilyn Monroe will always stand for the ultimate beauty, sex appeal and incredible glamour. With the least make up, with curves that today would label any as fat (shame on us!) and no desperation for the spotlight (on the contrary) – she remains the biggest film & style star so far.

Marilyn Monroe

What I most love about her is her ability to transcend the camera – she lives through her pictures leaving us in awe and admiration for this woman who can be all in one!

I’ve always thought models are the best trend-setters & style icons out there! Could it be all the hours spend around stylists, designers? Or the times away on photoshoots? The small styling tips they get…  And not to mention the access to clothes, accessories… What a life! And they always look like they’ve just thrown something on and stepped out for a short walk or talk looking amazing. That’s what I love about the way models dress. And that’s what I call style.

Star Style - Coco Rocha

Star Style – Coco Rocha

They are the definition of effortlessly cool, sexy & trendy. Perhaps they literally just can’t be bothered with fashion anymore, with all those hours spend among clothes and designers, they’ve just grown immune to fashion while ironically acquiring a taste and eye for style.

Coco Rocha the Canadian top model is part of this lot – with outfits styled in such a way that she seems not to give much damn about it, or when she does care, she leaves something undone: hair, make up. Or simply goes for converses or weird looking items that clash with an outfit but make it look stylish in a rather unique, model’ish way. On the red carpet she sometimes looks like she can’t be bothered yet manages to keep the spotlight and make us look twice before we ditch her outfits. Though The Met Gala 2012 was a complete disaster, regardless of how many times I looked at it.

Star Style - Coco Rocha; Allure Korea

Star Style – Coco Rocha; Allure Korea

Coco’s style is a bit unpredictable but rather feminine. Sometimes she goes for crazy styles. Other times she oozes so much femininity and sex appeal. Some other times she’s just a kid only to try later on a lady like look. She can go for vamp’ish as well as rock, and she always does it with that nonchalance and sophistication that might be the result of modelling or better yet her in born style. To be honest with you she may not be one of my favourites but I do like some of the outfits and the vibe of her style altogether.

Here are some photos of Coco Rocha style.

From the freckled girl sitting on her suitcase in an airport to her glory days as a supermodel, Kate Moss has grown, changed, stirred controversy, envy and admiration. But she has always remained true to her own self, never hiding or pretending to be somebody else. Patrick Demarchelier had a strong feeling about Kate since he saw her in a Dolce & Gabbana photo shoot, naming her ‘the next Twiggy’.

Kate Moss - Style Icon

Kate Moss – Style Icon

She ruled the 90s fashion scene with her androgynous look, making a name for herself as that tiny not so pretty model but with a certain something that nobody owns. She became the Calvin Klein  girl, the grunge poster girl – that every female in London wanted to look like and party with till dawn. Her child like physique awkwardly mixed with her seductive persona, her ability to be unbelievably beautiful or strangely ugly, to be innocent and sinful at the same time, her amazing bone structure – make Kate Moss a perfect face and body. A perfect union of tiny imperfect bits.  A bit of crooked teeth in a world of veneers, flat boobs in a reign of silicon, free spirit in a media of PR’s that dictate fake lifestyles. For more on the ’90s fashion – grunge style see my last week’s post ‘2012 Grunge Trend. Are the ’90s Back?’

Her entire rebel, free & careless persona is reflected in a unique fashion that make Kate Moss a Style Icon. When asked about her style she genuinely confesses she dresses according to her moods. No rules. Except she always goes for black when a bit depressed. But other than that she has no interest in trends or how to bring the catwalk styles to the street. Kate wears skinny low waist jeans when everyone else doesn’t, and then she goes for high waist and large ones when everyone else goes for skinny. She loves vintage pieces and altering her clothes – cut offs, shorter hemlines, whatever she feels in the mood for. Always pairing them with what fashion stylists would call a ‘Fashion Don’t’. Her ‘Fashion do’s’ are jewelry (never can have too many) and her mixing of styles.

Kate Moss will be the one wearing a dress when everyone else goes for trousers. And vice versa. She will walk bare foot in a show and never give a damn. She pairs expensive dresses with grunge boots, or tiny stilettos with boyfriend T-shirts. She wears her hair uncombed and tousled on the red carpet, looking gorgeous with no effort. She can go bare or with makeup (charcoal eye pencil apparently applied with no care) and turn heads. She is the definition of glamorously careless, effortlessly cool. A style icon without trying or desiring to be one. I guess all those years of supermodel and mingling with the fashion ones have payed off. Or perhaps it’s in her. After all… clothes can be bought. But style is something you have or you don’t.

The so called ‘America Dream’ fashion trend or as some call it the ‘Americana Current‘ of 2012 has a lot to owe to Lana Del Rey if you ask me. Regardless of me being a fan of her music and style (which yes I do confess I hopelessly adore) lately I’ve seen a lot of new fashion editorials that steal or should I say borrow a bit of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Gangster Nancy Sinatra’ and ‘Lolita got lost in the hood’ looks.

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey

This New York 25 year-old songstress who so lusciously performs Video Games has managed to hit stardom in 2011 and has since been a fashion cover girl – with her name rolling off our tongues as we sometimes confess to listening to her music. It’s not a bad thing you know. And it shouldn’t be a guilty pleasure, but a simple and assumed bliss. Huge names and talented people before us have spotted her music and style potential and paved her road with success and fashion influence.

Lana Del Rey – Mulberry Bag

Just last week Mulberry launched the Del Rey Bag, two weeks before due time something quite rare in the fancy world of fashion let alone a huge brand such as Mulberry. And the list goes on with her not-too-long-ago fashion experiences. Video Games was used as background music for 2012 SS shows of Prabal and Christopher Kane. She performed at Mulberry‘s parties and was among the very few too fresh artists that Vogue has ever made cover faces. Vogue UK was a bit too hasty on that one, if you ask me. Not because Lana Del Rey lacks style, impact, character or a fashion voice, but because a Vogue cover is a gift to be earned in time.

However her style is impeccable – fashion forward, retro, glam but somehow a bit grunge. She is the master of beauty queen looks bravely mixed with a rebel rock trash style. Just when you think you’ve figured her all out with her long sharp red nails, pouty lips and false eyelashes (add more makeup, big earrings, Old Hollywood hair waves) she’s twisted your world upside down – wearing converses and plain T-shirts. But as style is in the details here’s what makes Lana stand out of the crowd: her T-shirts are always paired with chunky glamorous feminine necklaces; her converses are worn with her latest bag from Mulberry… She mixes retro with modern, elegant with sport, classy with cheap, sexy with prude, tasteful with kitsch. Her editorials look stunning echoing ideas of long gone beauty and edginess. Her videos are powerful pitches of what free style and spirit can create. Her kitsch glam rock ’50’s style American trailer park woman look is one of my favorites. She embodies courage, free spirit, brilliant sense of style, originality & power to influence. All beautifully sustained by immense talent. And a sexy name – Lana Del Rey.

For a proper ‘Happy Birthday’ I have put together some pictures I love of Jessica Szohr Vanessa from Gossip Girl. Yes it’s her B-day today! I have meant to do a short closeup of her style for such a long time. I always thought she manages to pull off some of the best and coolest outfits. As Nicole Richie she as well is a Boho Chic Queen: lots of bangles, rings, earrings, vintage jewelry just thrown on her with no apparent thought. Her ability to look amazing in polished red carpet outfits and rugged jeans as well – puts her on my Style Icons list. She’s just one of those girls who can throw on anything and look  amazing. I don’t know if it’s her own style or a celebrity thing (as she’s not the only one who can pull off this effortlessly cool look), but whatever it is I love it. Here’s something we can look into: ‘How to look cool with no apparent effort?’

Just came across an old photo of Nicole Richie from the time she was the first guest editor at Who What Wear, in 2007 and it simply triggered for me a crave to look at some of her pictures which I am sharing with you. Two things she wears that I always love? White T shirt & Jewelry.

Nicole Richie in 2007 - 1st guest editor at Who What Wear

Nicole Richie in 2007 - 1st guest editor at Who What Wear

I am always so very pleased to see how little effort Nicloe needs to look the part. Skinny jeans or boho dresses. Millions of bangles. Slouchy t shirts or blouses. Sky high heels. Caps. Hats. Leather jackets paired with the most unusual outfits. And let’s not forget her trade mark: the super size shades which she turned into a complete craze and trend. Or her white t shirts – which she confesses always come in handy and look so amazing with… well anything.

Defying rules has turned this tiny blonde beauty into a style icon. Hollywood Stylists were so appalled when she wore Chanel bag‘s belts for bracelets! She’s the women who brought back the head scarves and head jewelry. A mother, a daughter, a business woman, a style icon, promoter of her own fashion line ‘House of Harlow’ – Nicole Richie remains this sexy boho chic blonde with thick fringe and Betty Davis eyes. I sometimes think she just plays dress up regardless of any trends or fashion fad. Could this be the secret to her fashion & style impact?
