The Midi Dress: 5 Must-Have Styles To Wear & Shop For!

As of lately, say… past 6 months I’ve developed this condition you see. It’s called compulsive shopping for any midi style dress I lay my eyes on. It’s a drag on my finances but it makes me fell so fucking good I couldn’t care less. And I’d like to think it makes me look good too. It’s gotten so serious that no matter what I go shopping for – groceries included – I make my way into some shop/store/mall/outlet (you name it, I don’t discriminate) and if there’s one midi dress in that shop, I find it, and I make the bitch mine. I’m that good.

Clearly I have what they call a slight addiction. I call it sartorial love affair to midi dresses. Or, obsession of the moment.

Tomato tomato the point is simple: midi dresses are a thing, and for once I’m spot on on something that’s IN.

What does midi mean? It’s a length okay, and it’s past your knees, or right around them, it can be tight, pencil, flowy, A-line, printed, uni, lace, leather, casual, polished, refined, evening, dressy, messy – there is no limit to midi not being a certain way, there is no faux pas to how you style it, there is no rule that be it broken would not make this style fabulous.

And you wonder why I’m hooked.

I think the midi dress is probably the best dress style in the world, cause it fits every body type, every occasion, hell you can go from one event to a complete different one wearing the same dress. Perhaps you just change the shoes. It is the best dress in the world.

And yes it comes in a billon of styles to fit most occasions, although if you ask me any style goes for any occasion. Most of the times.

1. The 70s inspired midi fluid dress. My ultimate favourite. It’s usually in floral print with long sleeves, or short-cape-style-sleeves, a la Sophia Loren, or Capri inspired holidays when you ride the scooter and fall madly in love with an Italian hunk. Briefly.

It’s a dress that goes from office spring days, to cocktail parties, to weddings, to fashion meetings. It’s the definition of feminine sophistication mixed with a dash of retro and glam-diva-esque vibe (hate that word. ‘diva’. but it does the job here.)

2. The 90s inspired midi dress. It’s a version of the slip dress mixed with the retro style from above, but it still has some sort of 70s vibe to it a la Bianca Jagger-slash-Studio-54-fashion. Spaghetti straps, high slit, silky it barely sits on your skin, bare back, dances to the wind, usually in one colour. It’s sex. Pure sex.

3. The bodycon midi dress. It’s probably the most famous of them all. The va-va-voom version of the midi dress became the go-to-outfit for a very sexy look. It’s more club/evening/party/event appropriate rather than office or street style. The Kardashians are the best ambassadors for this dress style, which can be a dress per se, or a set: pencil skirt and a paired top. The bodycon set is still a major trend this season and it’s slowly transforming into more casual day-time looks with fabrics such as light knits or jersey.

4. The casual midi dress. It’s the go-to-look for anything really, even lazy office hours when sneakers or flats are okay. It also looks kinda cool with ankle boots or high heels. It’s either light knit or jersey made, perfect for any occasion. Seriously now.

5. The 50s midi dress a la Mad Men, that super cinged at the waist and puffy skirt style, with a fitted upper part. It’s not at all my favourite dress style but a lot of the women I know kinda love it, so I assume I am the troubled one.

Enough rant. Styling tips also unnecessary since the midi dress works with anything, so that only leaves room for inspo.
